Why have a wind turbine?

The turbine was erected in February 1999 as a joint partnership between Durham County Council and Northern Electric.

Its purpose is :-

  •   To demonstrate that small scale wind power can be acceptable and practical.

  •   To contribute towards the reduction of CO2 emissions.

  •   To provide schoolchildren in the North East with a practical example of   sustainable technology.

  •   To provide information and to provoke debate about sustainability and issues   such as air pollution and global warming.

  •   To allow the children of the area to learn about the science and technology of   electrical generation from wind.

  •   In the long term, to save money on electricity bills.
